A Bangladesh Air Force F-7 fighter training jet crashed into a school building in Dhaka's Uttara area on Monday. At least 19 person has died, and more than 90 are seriously injured in this tragic accident. Eyewitnesses said that the Chinese-made F-7 aircraft crashed straight into the Milestone School and College building. Fortunately, no students were present on the premises at the time, which prevented a larger tragedy, but several nearby individuals sustained serious injuries.
Local media and TV footage showed large flames and thick black smoke rising after a loud explosion. People at the scene ran for safety, and rescue teams arrived quickly.
According to the Air Force, the Chinese-made training jet took off at 1:06 PM and crashed into the school building at around 1:30 PM. A major fire broke out in the school building after the crash.
As per Bangladesh's prominent media outlet Prothom Alo, fire brigade and military teams reached the site soon after receiving reports of the fire. Eight firefighters vehicles were actively involved in the rescue operation.
The fire department confirmed at least 19 deaths so far. 100 injured individuals were transported by Air Force helicopter to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
A teacher from Milestone College told the media that when the plane hit the building, several students were trapped inside. Teachers and staff quickly started rescue efforts, which were later supported by the army and fire department.
Viral videos on social media showed injured people being pulled out. According to reports, the injured were sent to Uttara Adhunik Hospital, Dhaka Medical College, Kurmitola General Hospital, Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College, and other medical centres.
Emergency teams stayed at the scene, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Some of them are reported to be in serious condition. The school building sustained heavy damage. Investigation agencies have begun looking into what caused the crash.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Air Force or the government of Bangladesh. However, local officials have confirmed one fatality and increased security in the area.
The incident has sparked intense reactions on social media. Citizens have questioned safety protocols and asked how Air Force training flights are allowed over populated areas.
One user commented that permitting flights near schools puts children's safety at risk. Another questioned whether the Air Force's training protocols should be reviewed.
Government sources say the Air Force is setting up a committee to look into the incident. Initial reports suggest a possible technical fault, but further investigation is underway regarding the pilot’s actions and the condition of the aircraft.
Local authorities have temporarily closed Milestone School and are recording statements from its administration. A full report from the Air Force is likely to be shared within the next 72 hours.
